For the ninth time since 1982, we are honored to invite the world to the international Gay Games

To the many thousands of participants, officials, volunteers, sponsors, supporters, friends, and family members who have gathered here in Cleveland + Akron, we thank you for your ongoing commitment to our movement.

Special thanks to our hosts in Northeast Ohio. This group has worked tirelessly to prepare for this life-changing week of sport and culture on the beautiful shores of Lake Erie. This is their moment as much as it is your moment. Thanks also goes to the many generous contributions by local law firm of Thompson Hine LLP and their lead attorney Gary Walters.

The FGG is the non-profit organization that oversees the quadrennial Gay Games and safeguards its founding principles of "Participation, Inclusion, and Personal Best." The FGG is made up of sport and culture organizations from Europe, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. In 2009, these members chose Cleveland+Akron as the host of Gay Games 9, and for five years they have worked with the members of our wonderful host committee to help them stage this edition of the world's largest sport and culture event open to all.

The FGG promotes equality worldwide through sport and culture, works with other organizations to promote the goal of sport and culture for all, and defends the fundamental human right to participate freely in sport and culture.

From the 1,300 trailblazing participants at the inaugural 1982 Gay Games through the tens of thousands who have followed them, this amazing event has proven its continued relevance and its ability to endure. The world has changed a lot in the past 32 years, but the ability of the Gay Games to inspire the very best in humanity remains unchallenged. Simply stated, Gay Games change the world!
